Residence in Cyprus
Introduction
Residence in Cyprus forms the basis for all important legal and tax matters. It is a prerequisite for registering property, establishing a company, accessing the healthcare system, and many other official procedures.
Proof of Residence
As there is no central registration system, the utility bill (after changing the name) serves as official proof of residence. Alternatively, a rental contract of at least twelve months or the purchase of property can be presented.
Company Formation and Work Capability
A confirmed residence is essential to register a Cyprus Limited in the company register. This is the only way to claim the low corporate tax rate of 12.5%, obtain a Cypriot tax number, and secure a work permit.
Non-Dom Status
New settlers can apply for Non-Dom status and benefit from exemptions on the so-called Special Defense Contribution (tax on rental income, interest, dividends, and cryptocurrencies) for up to 17 years. A minimum stay of 60 days per calendar year is required.
60- and 183-Day Rules
Those who spend between 61 and 183 days annually in Cyprus can be considered tax residents and have their worldwide income taxed, with certain incomes potentially exempt. From 184 days of stay, one automatically becomes a tax resident; double taxation agreements ensure that income is not taxed twice.
Determining Actual Residence
Besides the duration of stay, the center of life, family ties, property ownership, regular presence, and integration into the local community play a role. Individual consultation with a tax expert is recommended to avoid unexpected tax consequences.
Guide for Relocation
It is recommended to first find a suitable property and transfer the utility bill to your own name to officially prove residence. Shortly after, the Yellow Slip should be applied for to obtain the permanent residence permit (ARC number) and secure access to the healthcare system, among other things. Afterwards, Non-Dom status can be applied for to optimize the tax situation.
Establishing a Cyprus Limited
Finally, residence enables the establishment of a Cyprus Limited, which is particularly attractive due to low corporate taxes and a growing economic location. However, all advantages of this company form are only available with an officially proven residence.
