Health Insurance in Cyprus: How to Ensure You're Truly Covered as an Expat

When people move to Cyprus, the first things that come to mind are sun, beach, and tax savings. But once the boxes are unpacked—or when the first illness strikes—the question inevitably arises: How does the doctor thing actually work here?

The healthcare system in Cyprus is surprisingly good—but it differs significantly from those in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland in a few respects. Here’s a simple overview, without all the bureaucratic jargon.

1. The public health system: GESY (GHS)

For the past few years, Cyprus has had a public health care system called GESY. In short: It is the counterpart to statutory health insurance.

The entire system is funded through taxes on your income, salary, or dividends (if, for example, you own a Cypriot limited company).

How does that work in practice?

Once you have your residence permit (Yellow Slip) and are registered in the system, choose your regular primary care physician (Personal Doctor). He's your first point of contact for everything.

  • Family doctor: Visits to your assigned primary care physician cost you 0 €.
  • Specialist: If you need to see a specialist, get a referral from your primary care physician. The appointment with the specialist usually costs a nominal 6 €.
  • Medications: You can pick up your prescriptions at the pharmacy for usually 1 € per package.

The catch: Not every doctor participates in GESY. And just like in Germany, you sometimes have to wait a little longer for appointments with specialists through the public system.

2. Private Health Insurance: More Convenience & Faster Appointments

Many expats use GESY for basic healthcare coverage but also take out private insurance—or opt for private insurance exclusively from the start.

Why privately?

  • Immediate Appointments: No more waiting months for an MRI or a specialist appointment.
  • Free Choice of Doctor: You can go to any doctor or private clinic—whether or not they are a GESY partner.
  • Language: Especially in regions like Paphos or Limassol, a great many private doctors speak German or English fluently.
  • Global Protection: This is useful if you regularly go home for vacation or travel.

How much does it cost?

  • Local Cypriot rates: They often start at around 60 to 120 € per month (depending on age and deductible).
  • International Policies: They usually range from 150 to 300 €+ per month, but they cover medical treatment worldwide.

3. Special Case: The paperwork for the immigration authorities

If you are new to the island and are applying for your first residence permit, the Migration Authority requires you to have health insurance.

To do this, almost everyone starts by taking out a so-called "Alien Insurance" ... That's an extremely simple basic policy for about 100 to 150 €. per year. It's basically just a way to get the stamp from the authorities. For actual medical care, most people switch to GESY or a full-fledged private insurance plan afterward.

What's the best choice right now?

  1. Affordable & Reliable: Sign up with GESY. That's more than enough for everyday life and standard medications.
  2. The Gold Standard for Expats: The combination of GESY (for everyday expenses and copayments) and private supplemental insurance for emergencies, surgeries, and the freedom to choose any hospital.
